Other Member Spotlight

AACS recently interviewed member Dawn Veatch, Director of Education and Culture at The Studio Academy of Beauty for our Black History Month Member Spotlight. Dawn shared her journey, challenges, and accomplishments, and told us what it means to be an AACS member in today’s beauty education space.

How long have you been in the beauty education industry?

My journey in the beauty industry began 20 years ago when I first stepped into beauty school. In 2009, I became a licensed Instructor. From the moment I picked up my first comb and shears, I knew this industry was where I belonged. Over the years, I have had the privilege of growing, evolving, and helping others do the same. Beauty is not just about hair and makeup it is about confidence, creativity, and connection, and I am grateful every day to be part of it.

How did you get started at The Studio Academy of Beauty?

I began my career in the beauty industry in Indiana, and as life took me across the country, I remained deeply rooted in this field. For the past 9 years, I have had the pleasure of being part of The Studio Academy of Beauty, where I have been able to grow both personally and professionally. I served as the Director of one of our Arizona campuses for six years, and I now have the incredible opportunity to lead as the Director of Education and Culture for all locations. Our school is dedicated to not only shaping skilled beauty professionals but also fostering an environment where creativity, confidence, and excellence thrive. It is a privilege to be part of a team that empowers future beauty professionals to chase their dreams.

Who or what inspires you?

My students inspire me every day. Watching people work hard, push through challenges, and transform their lives through education is incredibly motivating. Seeing their confidence grow, their skills sharpen, and their dreams come to life reminds me why I do what I do. Their dedication and resilience fuel my passion for this industry. I am also inspired by the educators I work with, helping them bring their best to the classroom and discover new ways to deliver the curriculum is just as fulfilling. When educators grow, students thrive, and that cycle of learning and transformation keeps me inspired every day.

What is your biggest professional accomplishment?

While promotions and awards are meaningful, my greatest accomplishment is the impact I have had on my students. The most rewarding moments are the heartfelt thank you from graduates, hairstylists, and estheticians who have changed their lives, built careers, raised families, and found financial and professional security. Knowing that I have played even a small role in their success is the greatest honor of my career.

How does being a member of AACS benefit you?

Being a member of AACS has provided both myself and my school with invaluable support, resources, and connections. It is an incredible network of like-minded schools and industry professionals, all dedicated to elevating and strengthening the beauty industry. AACS has also given us the opportunity to unify and advocate for our industry when challenges arise, ensuring that we continue to grow and thrive together. I have had the pleasure of attending and volunteering at CEA and Annual Conference for the last several years, and each year, I walk away with increased knowledge and renewed passion for the industry. The experience is always inspiring, and it reinforces my commitment to education and the future of beauty professionals.

What tips or advice would you give someone looking to enter the beauty industry?

My advice for anyone entering the beauty industry is to take it seriously and commit to the journey. It will be hard work there is no way around that, but it will also be 100% worth it. Success in this industry requires dedication, continuous learning, and a passion for your craft. If you stay focused, embrace every opportunity to grow, and put in the effort, you will build a career that is not only fulfilling but also life-changing.

Have you encountered any challenges in the beauty industry as a person of color?

My mother taught me at a young age that not everyone who smiles in your face has good intentions and I have found that to be true. However, she also taught me to let my inner light shine and never allow anyone to dim it. As a woman of color in the beauty industry, I have faced challenges, but I have met them with resilience, grace, and an unwavering belief in my purpose. I have learned that while obstacles may come, they do not define my strength, my passion, and my commitment to uplifting others. And through it all, I hold onto my mother’s wisdom: Joy comes in the morning.
